Privacy policy
Last updated: 23 October 2026
In short: Wasabi lets you order at a restaurant table from your phone and split the bill. You don't need an account to order. We only keep what's needed to run your table, your restaurant and, if you sign in, your history. We don't sell your information, we don't show ads, and restaurants only see your visits to them.

1. Who we are
Wasabi is a table-ordering service for restaurants and bars, run from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. This policy covers the website and app at wasabi.co.tz: the pages diners use at the table, the pages restaurant owners, managers and staff use, and the Wasabi company pages.
Each restaurant using Wasabi decides what is on its menu and runs its own service. For information about your visits to a particular restaurant, that restaurant and Wasabi both play a part, as described below.
2. What we collect
When you order at a table (no account needed)
- The first name you type to join a table, and what you order.
- Your table's activity: calls for the waiter, bill requests, how the bill is split and who has paid.
- A random identifier for your phone, created automatically so the system knows which orders are yours. It isn't linked to your name, number or email unless you sign in.
If you sign in as a diner
- Your phone number (if you sign in with a phone number) or your Google account's name and email address (if you sign in with Google).
- Your name as you'd like restaurants to see it.
- A history of your visits: the restaurant, date, table, what you ordered and your share of the bill.
- Your choices about WhatsApp offers from each restaurant, with the date of each choice.
If you run or work at a restaurant
- Owners and managers: Google account email, and for new restaurants the details given when registering (restaurant name, contact name, phone number, area and number of tables).
- Waiters: the name the owner or manager enters, and a 4-digit PIN used to start a shift.
- The restaurant's menu, prices, photos, logo, colours, table setup, and records of orders and service times used for its dashboard.
- Subscription records: plan, payment dates and the date the restaurant is paid until.
We don't collect payment card details. Diners pay the restaurant directly, as they normally would.
3. How we use it
- To run your table: show the menu, send orders to the kitchen and bar, alert your waiter, and work out the bill.
- To show signed-in diners their past visits, and suggest what they usually order at that restaurant.
- To let restaurants manage their menu, staff and service, and see their own sales and timing figures.
- To run the Wasabi service: approve restaurants, manage subscriptions, keep the service secure and prevent misuse.
- To contact restaurants about their account. We only contact diners if they ask us to.
4. Who can see it
- The restaurant you're at sees your first name, your orders and your table's activity, so its staff can serve you. If you're signed in, it can see your visits to it, but never your visits to other restaurants.
- Other people at your table see your first name, what you ordered and your share of the bill.
- Wasabi can see restaurant account and subscription records, and can see other information when needed to help a restaurant, fix a problem or keep the service secure.
- Our service providers: Wasabi runs on Google Firebase (Google LLC), which stores the data and handles sign-in, including sending SMS codes, and on GitHub Pages (GitHub, Inc.), which hosts the website. These providers process data on our behalf and may store it outside Tanzania.
- The authorities, if the law requires it.
We don't sell personal information and we don't use it for advertising.
5. WhatsApp offers
Signed-in diners who use a phone number can choose, separately for each restaurant, whether that restaurant may send them offers on WhatsApp. It's off unless you tick the box. You can change it at any time under Sign in → your account, and each change is saved with the date so the restaurant can show it has your permission.
6. Google sign-in
If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address and Google account identifier. We use them only to sign you in, to show your name and history, and, for owners and managers, to check which restaurants you run. We don't receive your Google password, and we don't access your Gmail, contacts, files or anything else in your Google account.
Wasabi's use of information received from Google APIs follows the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
7. Your phone and camera
Wasabi saves a few small items in your browser so it works smoothly: for example, which table you're at, which restaurant a staff phone belongs to, and whether you've already seen the welcome screen. We don't use advertising or tracking cookies.
If you use Scan table QR, the camera is used only while the scanner is open, to read the code on your table. Reading happens on your phone; no pictures or video are saved or sent to us.
8. How long we keep it
- Signed-in diners: your profile, visits and offer choices are kept until you delete your account.
- Table and order records: kept so restaurants can see their sales and service history. Orders made without signing in are linked only to a first name and a random phone identifier.
- Restaurant accounts: kept while the restaurant uses Wasabi, and afterwards for as long as needed for accounting and legal reasons.
9. Your choices and rights
- You can order without signing in.
- Signed-in diners can see their visits, change offer choices, sign out, or delete their account and visits at any time from their account page.
- You can ask us for a copy of your information, ask us to correct or delete it, or object to how we use it, by contacting us below. Under Tanzania's Personal Data Protection Act, 2022, you can also complain to the Personal Data Protection Commission.
10. Security
Data is sent over encrypted connections and protected by database rules that limit who can read or change it: for example, each table's QR code carries a secret key, waiters need a PIN, and only a restaurant's owner and managers can change its settings. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and will act quickly if something goes wrong.
11. Children
Wasabi isn't aimed at children. Children can order at a table with their family, but they shouldn't create an account.
12. Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top and, for significant changes, tell restaurants and signed-in diners.
